Exam Pattern for JEE Main
The design of the examination has been kept making sure that the best from the lot is chosen for the next stage- JEE Advanced. The conducting authority is Joint Seat Allocation Authority and the examination is held in two papers- Paper- 1 and Paper- 2.
Paper- 1 is kept for the ones who are applying exclusively for B.Tech/B.E. courses. On the other hand, Paper- 2 is for those who want to pursue a career in architecture and planning. The second paper is conducted offline.
However, as per the latest announced pattern, a candidate would have to give a separate paper for planning from January 2020.
According to a career guide from a reputed institute that conducts JEE Mains coaching classes, over the years the pattern for JEE Main has hardly ever changed. Paper- 1 is conducted for a duration of three hours and has thirty MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions) each from three different subjects- Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. For every correct answer to a question, the candidate is awarded 4 marks. However, if the candidate gets the answer wrong, 1 mark is deducted.
As per the latest announcement introduced in January 2020, the pattern would consist of 20+5 questions per subject means 20 questions will be objective and the rest 5 will be based on TITA (Type in the Answer) type.
In addition to the above-stated pattern, a reputed faculty conducting JEE Mains coaching classes clarifies the following regarding the mode of the examination—
❖ B.Tech/B.E. would be conducted in CBT (Computer Based Test) mode only.
❖ Mathematics (Part-I) for B.Arch and Aptitude Test (Part-II) will be CBT based, while Drawing Test(Part- III) will be in Paper and Pen-Based where the student has to attempt the asked question on A4 size drawing sheet.
❖ Mathematics (Part-I), Aptitude Test (Part-II), and Planning-related questions (Part- III) are all on CBT mode.
Noteworthy Changes in the Past 5 years
The JEE Main examination has witnessed a prolific amount of changes in the last five years. To crack the examination, one needs to take JEE Mains coaching classes to know what precisely has been asked in the previous years. In addition to this, the tutors at the center would always guide the students in accordance with the latest design and pattern.
“The following are some of the significant changes that JEE Main has witnessed during the last five years”, says one of the faculties taking JEE Mains coaching classes—
Class XIIth marks were given a weightage of approximately 40% during the year 2013- 16 for declaring the AIR (All India Rank).
AADHAR Card was made mandatory for the students prior to enrolling for the examination.
NTA (National Testing Agency) would be conducting JEE Main examination twice every year thus ensuring a year is not wasted for the test taker.
The best of the two scores would be considered for the preparation of the ranking/merit list.
Other Significant Format of the Examination
▪ The medium of the examination has been set in three languages- Hindi, English, and Gujarati.
▪ The exam clears the doubt regarding numerical representation as in, if the answer to a question is 5, then the values 5, 5.0, 5.00, 5.000, 5.0000, 05, 05.0, 05.00, 05.000, 05.0000 all stands correct.
It is, therefore, always recommended to keep a close eye on the changing pattern of the examination every year. Now being conducted twice a year, it has been an advantage for many students who either could not perform well in their first attempt or missed because of some reason. This has ensured that an entire year is not wasted.
